Etienne Maurice

FOUNDER & CEO, WALKGOOD LA

“Without UNITY,
there is no CommUNITY.”

What have you been working on? Gas yourself!
WalkGood LA. Providing safe spaces for people of color to heal. Thats my life’s mission.

How does your culture inform your creative work?
Where there is people, there is power. The people who are moved by the work I do as a yoga instructor, filmmaker, creative are the ones who inspire me to persevere in these spaces.

What is your greatest struggle/challenge these days?
The greatest challenge for more me these days would be the time i give to myself to take care of myself and asking for help. You’re no good to anyone if you’re not good to yourself. WalkGood hosts events every Sunday and it’s a lot of work. Ya boy be so drained. I just need to be more intentional about taking my own advice and filling my own cup.

What does community mean for you as a creative?
Without UNITY there is no CommUNITY. Community means everything. To have people’s support and believe in your mission is half the battle. The other half is the ability to maintain community.

What inspires you in your creative process?
I’m very adamant about turning a negative into a positive. That same rule applies to my creative process. I’m always trying to express what i’ve gone through, good or bad and incorporate those experiences into my art or my yoga flows. Transparency builds connection. Whatever I do, I want folks to connect.

Is there anything happening in your community that you'd like to shed some light on?
Join @walkgoodla every Sunday at 10am at Kenneth Hahn State Park in Los Angeles for BreatheGood, a free community yoga class for people of color. To RSVP, follow @WalkGoodLA on all platforms.
