Layla Mustafa

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF GLOBAL BRAND PARTNERSHIPS, RCA RECORDS

“Laughing makes you feel good and is so good for the spirit.”

What have you been working on? Gas yourself!
So much! We’re gearing up for a new Lucky Daye album that’s been really exciting for me. Otherwise, I’ve just been trying to connect dots and work with my friends.

How does your culture inform your creative work?
Oh man, my culture influences everything I do. It completely shapes how I see the world and what ideas I’m able to come up with.

What is your greatest struggle/challenge these days?
There are so many cool projects and ideas I want to see come to life that I just don’t have time for. It’s all good though because I know all of them will contribute to better work in the long run

What does community mean for you as a creative?
Community is everything. My community motivates me, encourages me and inspires me daily. I feel a duty to pour back into my community however I can.

What inspires you in your creative process?
I love to make people laugh. Laughing makes you feel good and is so good for the spirit. My first instinct in any project that crosses my path is how can I at least make someone smile when they receive this?

Is there anything happening in your community that you'd like to shed some light on?
My parents are Sudanese and what’s happening in Sudan right now is heartbreaking. My people are fighting for basic rights and freedom. We should talk about this more!
