Darian Harvin
BEAUTY REPORTER, NEWS CURATOR &
CULTURE WRITER
What have you been working on? Gas yourself!
I have an art book on iconic Black women coming out with Chronicle Books in the fall. I will soon be the Beauty Editor at Large for Los Angeles Times culture magazine Image. I am currently developing my own video-first podcast; a weekly news show that covers culture through the lens of beauty.
How does your culture inform your creative work?
I bring all of my life experiences to my work. Everything I've seen, been through, and witnessed, I use that to inform my work. These experiences always include my interactions with other people and what I've learned through conversations, reading and travel. I harness what is going on in the world -- politically, socially, economically -- to respond and be apart of the conversation through my writing.
What is your greatest struggle/challenge these days?
Going from being a freelancer and contractor, to being an artist and creative business person.
What does community mean for you as a creative?
It means participating. Stepping up. Listening. Serving your community, and knowing others will be there for you too.
What inspires you in your creative process?
Walks. Walks almost serve as a mental re-set for me during a long day of work.
Is there anything happening in your community that you'd like to shed some light on?
I love Compton Girl's Club and the work they are doing to uplift young girls through tech, media, and sisterhood.
